Profile

Who Am I?

I am an ocean loving, pun throwing, curly haired industrial designer looking to leave his mark on this world. I believe that as a designer you should always challenge yourself and push the boundaries in order to grow and develop your skills. The way I look at it is that if you are out of your comfort zone, you are doing it right! I'm passionate about all areas of design and I love the fact that, as creatives we have the ability to take an idea from our minds and turn it into a physical object that can make a difference in this world. That is what makes the sleepless nights and coffee overdoses all worth it at the end of the day.

Why Design?

I believe that as a designer in any field, we have been equipped with the skill set to make an impact on this world. It is how each individual utilizes those skills which determines the good or bad effect of that impact. Personally, I believe that it should be in our nature to always make a positive impact on everything we touch. Whether it's an idea that can solve world hunger or a simple paper clip that uses less energy to produce, every aspect of industrial design should be aimed at making our world better!

Upon working at XYZ I quickly worked my way up to a head designer position. My roles consisted of project management, sketching, 3D modeling/rendering, prototyping and sourcing manufacturers.

Industrial/Product Designer - Freelance

I am currently working to develop my own name in the industry and have started freelance designing in the field of product design and industrial design. My services offer the full design process from conceptualization to making the product come to life.

Own Company - Rooted

Feb 2017 - Current

Based in Cape Town, Rooted was founded in 2017 as a start-up company consisting of myself and my business partner Misha van Schalkwyk. As of now, Rooted has produced mainly leather goods but is looking to expand its range utilizing other natural materials.

Lead Designer - Elgin Railway Market

May 2017 - Jun 2018

I was contracted on a 2 month job which quickly turned to a year long project. Along with Roger Orpen, I helped to transform an old Railway Station in Elgin into a steam punk, art deco inspired food & craft market. Services

Research

In depth research into all possible solutions to the problem at hand. Research would include creating relationships with possible 3rd party members as well as determining the most appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques.

Concept Development

This is the initial design phase where the journey begins to determine what the most appropriate design solution will be. This phase consists of sketching, 3D modeling, rendering and low-fidelity models.

Prototyping

All outcomes that have been determined from the concept development phase will be physically recreated and produced upon satisfaction to simulate a final 3D product. The final prototype will justify to the client the validity of the design.

Manufacturing

Research into necessary manufacturers will help with future production of a product. This information, along with the necessary drawings and files will be given to the client upon satisfaction of the final design.

I’m All About That Sketchy Business

What good are ideas if you cant give birth to them? My mind is constantly racing on how to come up with new ideas and products but so often you just forget to scribble them down and you forget about them. (Especially when you have the memory of a goldfish, like me!) I like to constantly sketch any ideas I have just to keep the creativity alive and to continue practicing the art of concept development. I cant even keep to one sketch book as I'm constantly drawing on anything in reaching distance no matter where I go. I feel sorry for the company I

Nespresso Yourself

I was never a fan of coffee growing up. I couldn't drink a cup unless it had a million spoons of sugar added to it (much to my dentists despair). So I gave up on that dream. It wasn't until my first year of varsity, I had a HUGE 2D deadline the next day which counted like 1000% towards my end of year mark. (oh, by the way - I tend to over exaggerate, apparently) So what does a young, naive and moderately enthusiastic university student do when he gets handed a brief 2 weeks in advance? Well he leaves it to the night before,
